Our team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and cardiac nurses is skilled in using the most advanced diagnostic and surgical technology available on the tiniest patients, bringing decades of experience and expertise to each patient's case. Our team is available 24/7.
Pediatric cardiologists are the leaders of the medical team. They work closely with other doctors-in-training such as pediatric cardiology fellows and pediatric residents. They diagnose and treat congenital heart disease, perform heart catheterizations, decide with the surgeon about heart surgery, and provide care before and after heart surgery. Some pediatric cardiologists implant pacemakers and defibrillators.
Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon
Pediatric cardiac surgeons perform the surgical repairs and are the leaders of the surgical team. In addition to the standard training pathway for cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons undergo additional training focusing on congenital cardiac conditions that qualifies them to take care of all congenital cardiac defects from birth to old age.
Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiologists
Anesthesiologists who sub specialize in pediatric cardiac anesthesia have the training to understand the effects of anesthesia on a child with heart disease, and are experts in the management of children with congenital heart abnormalities.
Pediatric Cardiac Intensivists
In many pediatric centers, cardiovascular disease is the single largest category of patients in a critical care unit. Pediatric cardiac intensivists are physicians with specialized training and experience in pediatric critical care as well as congenital heart disease. The care of critically ill newborns, infants, children and adults with congenital heart disease requires a collaboration between many specialists, including cardiologists, surgeons, intensivists, anesthesiologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and others. Our pediatric cardiac intensivists serve as team leaders in the care of patients admitted to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.
Pediatric Cardiac Nurse Practitioners
Pediatric nurse practitioners are Masters-prepared nurses who provide advanced nursing care. Pediatric nurse practitioners work closely with attending physicians and jointly manage the care of the patient. The nurse practitioners along with the cardiologist and cardiac surgeon will manage care pre and post heart surgery and heart catheterization.
Pediatric Cardiac Clinic Nurses
Pediatric nurses provide expert nursing care to children and families using state-of-the-art technology. Registered nurses provide care in our clinic and procedure areas as well as in our intensive care and general care units. They are specially-trained eyes and ears available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Nurses
The nursing team in the CVICU is comprised of dedicated critical care nurses that have received extra training to give them a specialized and in-depth knowledge of congenital heart disease and cardiac abnormalities. Each year, the nurses complete several hours of mandatory classroom education and skills labs. These sessions ensure that nurses are clinically competent and up-to-date with the latest developments regarding clinical management approaches and technologies. Many of our nurses have obtained special certification that designates them as clinical experts with our population of patients. All of our nurses are committed to providing the highest quality of family centered care.
