Meet our Neonatologists

 

David Fisher, MD, received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his internship and residency at the Medical College of Virginia followed by a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Center. Dr. Fisher is the Director of Neonatology and has special interests in neonatal pulmonary disease, nosocomial infection and Quality Improvement.
 
 

Michelle Chiu, MD received her medical degree from Medical College of Georgia. She completed her internship and residency at Carolinas Medical Center followed by a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Chiu has a special clinical interest in ECMO and total body cooling follow up. In addition, she has a special interest in medical student and resident education, including the use of high fidelity simulator models with NRP.

 

 

  Paul Engstrom, MD, graduated from the and received his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital followed by a Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at the University of Alabama. Dr. Engstrom is the director of the Neonatal Transport Program and Director of Resident Recruitment for the Department of Pediatrics.  
 
  Andrew Herman, MD, received his medical degree from Saint Louis University. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Virginia and completed a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Virginia. Dr. Herman has a specific interest in Acquired Neonatal Bowel Disease, NICU Quality Improvement, and care of the Extremely Low Birth Weight Infant.
 
  Docia Hickey, MD, graduated from and received her medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency at Carolinas Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Vanderbilt University.
 
  Thomas Kueser, MD graduated from and received his medical degree from Saint Louis University. He completed his residency at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Tripler Army Medical Center. Dr. Kueser has a special interest in residency and medical student education, tertiary care of the sick newborn (high frequency ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, nitric oxide) and residency recruiting.
 
 James Jones, MD received his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University. He completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Wake Forest University. Dr. Jones's clinical expertise includes sepsis, catheter-related blood stream infections, infection control, quality improvement in neonatology, and neonatal ventilator management.  
   
Karen Lessaris, MD received her medical degree from Southern Illinois University. She completed her residency at Southern Illinois University in pediatrics as well. After completing her residency Dr. Lessaris pursed her fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Lessasris has special interests in neonatal ECMO and infant apnea.
 
 

Timothy Mitchell, DO, received his medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He completed his Pediatric internship and residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Mitchell has special interest in the areas of Neonatal Hematology, Neonatal Pulmonary Hypertension and use of breast milk in extremely low birth weight neonates.

 
  Patricia Neal, MD, received her medical degree from Indiana University. She completed her internship and residency at Indiana University followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Indiana University. Dr. Neal has a special interest in Neonatal Nutrition.
 
  Thomas Payne, MD received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at Medical University of South Carolina.
 
  Mary Anne Rathbun, MD, received her medical degree from Albany Medical College. She completed her internship and residency at Columbus Children's Hospital followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of Rochester. Dr. Rathbun's specific interests include developmental care in the neonatal units, short bowel syndrome and care of the Extremely Low Birth Weigh Infant.
 
  Carmen Villaveces, MD, graduated from and received her medical degree from the Universidad de Antioquia, Medellin, Columbia. She completed her internship and residency at the University of South Florida, Tampa followed by a fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University of South Florida, Tampa as well.
