Blood and Marrow Transplantation

The Blood and Marrow Transplantation team treats patients with both cancerous and non-cancerous conditions. Blood and marrow transplantation involves the transfer of healthy bone marrow or blood stem cells from a donor to the patient. Physicians are available for inpatient and outpatient consultation. Levine Children's Hospital has all of the pediatric subspecialists and laboratory services available for state-of-the-art blood and marrow transplantation.

Conditions that we treat with blood and marrow transplantation include:

Leukemia

  • Acute lymphoblastic leukemia
  • Acute myelogenous leukemia
  • Chronic myelogenous leukemia
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome

Lymphoma

  • Hodgkin's disease
  • Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Solid Tumors

  • Neuroblastoma
  • Ewing sarcoma
  • Wilms' tumor

Bone marrow failure / Aplastic anemia

Sickle Cell Disease

Inherited Immunodeficiencies

  • Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID)

Types of Blood and Marrow Transplant

  • Allogeneic: Stem cells are from another person
  • Syngeneic: Stem cells are from an identical twin
  • Autologous: Stem cells are collected from the patient receiving the transplant weeks to months before transplant
