When you are a parent, you are never off-duty - neither are we! Our Children's Emergency Department and the Carolinas Poison Center are available around the clock, and our After Hours Clinic is open well into the evening and on weekends for minor illnesses or injuries when you can't make it to the pediatricians office before they close.
Children's Emergency Department
Emergency departments can be overwhelming and cannot always focus on the unique needs of children. That is why we established the region's first 24-hour Children's Emergency Department, dedicated to the needs of children from birth through age 17. The Children's Emergency Department is located at Carolinas Medical Center next to the main emergency department. It is accessed through a separate entrance and children and their families are cared for in a specialized area.
We are staffed with emergency specialists trained and experienced in caring for children and their families. Pediatric-specific triage guidelines and equipment are used to ensure your child's needs are assessed quickly and accurately.
The Children's Emergency Department is open 24 hours, ready to care for your child at any time with unmatched talent, experience and technology.

Carolinas Poison Center
If your child has come into close contact - either through the skin, eyes or mouth - with something that may be poisonous, call us immediately. Our Poison Center is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 1-800-222-1222; Charlotte and Mecklenburg County residents can call the local emergency line at 704-355-4000. We can help determine whether or not your child is in danger and advise you about what to do next.
In addition, we work throughout the year to help prevent accidental poisonings. If you would like to have a member of our team speak at your day care center or school, or to your church or civic group, contact us to schedule a time by calling 704-512-3749 or sending an email to mailto:alexa.steverson@CarolinasHealthCare.org. You may also access more information and download educational materials from our website (www.ncpoisoncenter.org).
Trauma
Trauma patients are supported by our Hemby Pediatric Trauma Institute which coordinates trauma services for children at Carolinas Medical Center, ensuring that the most severe cases are transferred to our Level One Trauma Unit. From admission to discharge, these staff members work with the hospital staff, closely monitoring each pediatric trauma patient's progress. And when children are home again, Hemby staff members assist them and their families with the transition back to everyday life.
