Pediatric Inpatient Services
Located adjacent to the main campus of Carolinas Medical Center, Levine Children's Hospital serves as a primary and secondary source of healthcare for children in the city of Charlotte. The hospital also acts as a tertiary care regional referral center for the greater Charlotte metropolitan area which has a population of over one million people, in addition to several counties in North and South Carolina.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
This state-of-the-art 20-bed PICU admits about 700 patients per year. The unit is managed by six pediatric intensivists, along with a pediatric PL-2 or PL-3 resident and a third-year emergency medicine resident. PL-3 residents provide in-house call coverage of this unit every eighth night, on average.
Newborn Services
There are more than 7,000 deliveries at CMC each year. The infants are cared for in the tower newborn nursery. Our pediatric residents care for about 2,500 of these newborns under the supervision of a member of the general pediatric faculty.
The 53-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery (NICN) admits about 1,000 infants each year. The nursery serves as a regional referral center for the subspecialty care of all newborns including those who have need for ECMO, pediatric surgery, and pediatric cardiology evaluation and surgery. The hospital's air and ground transport services and MedCenter Air provide more than 250 infants with transportation to the NICN each year.
All neonatal transports are performed by a trained team of neonatal nurses and respiratory therapists. Infant care is provided by a team of nurse practitioners and a team of residents and is supervised by neonatologists. The PL-1 cares for an average of eight infants. Call in the NICN is every fourth night for the PL-1 and is supervised by an in-house neonatologist.
The 32-bed Neonatal Progressive Care Nursery (NPCN) serves as a "step down" unit for the NICN and provides care for growing neonates who no longer need intensive care.
Pediatric Clinics
The CMC Myers Park Outpatient Pediatric Clinic is located one block from the main campus. Subspecialty clinics are held in the mornings and resident continuity clinics in the afternoon. General pediatrics clinic runs concurrently throughout the day. About 23,000 children are served by the general pediatric and subspecialty clinics per year. The continuity clinic experience is an important part of the pediatric residency at CMC. Each resident has two half-days of continuity clinic each week. The hospital-based continuity clinics provide opportunities for residents to develop and maintain relationships with patients and their families. Residents work together in teams and each team has a faculty advisor. Each resident also has a community continuity experience under the supervision of a private pediatrician. |
