By the end of the decade, more than 100,000 more children will be born into, or move to, this region and will need access to pediatric care. A dedicated children's hospital is needed to accommodate this growth. Pediatric patients and their families have different needs that are best addressed in a space devoted entirely to those needs. The primary focus for all staff members is on the child and the family, and each family is viewed as an important part of the healthcare team.

    • Neonatal Progressive Care Nursery (NPCN) with enhanced family support space, overnight rooms and meeting space
    • Neonatal Home Management Program (winner of JCAHO's 2001 Ernest A. Codman Award for excellence in the use of outcomes measurement to achieve healthcare quality improvement)
    • The only ECMO heart-lung bypass system for neonates in the region

    • The only pediatric cardiovascular surgery and heart transplant program in the region

Total Beds: 234 (185 licensed intensive care, progressive care and acute care beds; 13 licensed pediatric rehabilitation beds; 16 observation beds; 20 day hospital beds)
Location: On the Carolinas Medical Center main campus with connections to the Rush S. Dickson Tower and the surgery tower
Schedule: Construction began September 13, 2004. The hospital opened in December 2007.
Total Cost: $85 million
Architect: Karlsberger Companies of Columbus, Ohio, is well known for its work in pediatric healthcare and is an expert in designing space that complements family-centered care, in association with Wright, McGraw, Beyer of Charlotte.
