Child Maltreatment

Specially trained physicians at Levine Children's Hospital provide inpatient and outpatient services revolving around child maltreatment.

Services provided include:

  • Outpatient medical & forensic interviewing for child abuse
  • Inpatient medical evaluations in cases of suspected child abuse
  • Services for child abuse diagnosis, prevention and treatment
  • Involvement with state and local agencies, law enforcement and other clinical professionals
  • Medical follow-up
  • Children evaluated with concerns of the following:
    • Physical Abuse
    • Sexual Abuse
    • Failure to thrive
    • Neglect
    • Drug Exposure
    •  

North Carolina Statute requires any person having cause to believe that a child's physical or mental health or welfare has been or may be adversely affected by abuse or neglect to report to the Department of Social Services - Child Protective Services. Any person reporting in good faith is immune from liability, civil or criminal. To report a concern, call 704-336-CARE in Mecklenburg County or toll free 1-800-662-7030 throughout North Carolina.

What is a Child's Advocacy Center?

  • A state chapter of the National Children's Alliance, the national umbrella organization for children's advocacy centers dealing with child abuse
  • Each center is an independent center, providing services for abused children
  • A Child Advocacy Center relies on local communities for support
  • A Children's Advocacy Center must be involved with a multidisciplinary team that meets regularly. The team includes clinical professionals, law enforcement, representative from the DA's office, mental health providers, and other community agencies involved with the protection of children.

  • Specialized interviewing of children by forensic interviewer that complies with national standards for interviewing children
  • Appropriate exams including pediatric gynecology by specialty trained clinicians
  • Coordinated multidisciplinary investigations and team staffings
  • Comprehensive case management

  • Advocacy Prevention education and public awareness
