1st Year Residency Training

Meet with QI Coach:

A meeting will be scheduled for you and the QI coach to review the QI curriculum and expectations. A meeting planner will be sent to you via email with the date and location of the meeting. You should review this resident guide before attending the meeting.

Complete a QI Competency Survey

Complete the competency survey prior to beginning any QI project activities. This survey, distributed at your orientation, will assess your knowledge of QI methods and tools.

Participate in Didactic Sessions

Several didactic sessions will be offered throughout the year to reinforce specific QI methods and tools. Dates and times for these sessions will be announced and listed on the calendar. It is required that you attend, or view, 75% of the presentations throughout the year. If you are unable to attend the power points for the didactics will be viewable online.

Required Reading/Comptency Materials

To give you a basic understanding of QI methods and tools, you will need to fulfill the list of first year QI Reading Requirements.  If preferred, you can check these same readings out from the QI Library located in the Center for Advancing Pediatric Excellence, fourth floor Medical Education Building. For additional QI learning, visit the Glossary of QI Terms.

Complete Online IHI QI Modules

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) offers "Open School for Health Professions" which includes free online courses/modules about quality imporvement issues, methods, and tools. You are required to complete the first year QI modules listed below. Each lesson is approximately 15 minutes and allows you to stop and start a module as needed. Once complete, print off your transcript and give it to the QI Coach. To begin the courses, enter the IHI website and follow the instructions to access the modules. Note: You will need to establish a user name and password to gain entry.

Your required modules include:

1st Half of Year:

  • QI 101: Fundamentals of Improvement
    • Lesson 1: Errors Can Happen Anywhere-and to Anyone
    • Lesson 2: Health Care Today
    • Lesson 3: The institute of Medicine's Aims for Improvement
    • Lesson 4: How to Get from Here to There: Changing Systems

2nd Half of Year:

  • QI 102: The model for Improvement: Your Engine for Change
    • Lesson 1: An Overview of the Model for Improvement
    • Lesson 2: Setting and Aim
    • Lesson 3: Measuring
    • Lesson 4: Developing Changes
    • Lesson 5: Testing Changes

Complete a Personal Improvement Project

Work Independently, or with your QI Coach to establish a personal imrpovement project in which you will apply the basics of QI. Included in your project will be an Aim statement, mesaures, key changes, at least one PDSA cycle and lessons learned. The templates and examples of the PDSA, Aim and personal improvement project are found in the QI Tools.  Long term continuation of this project is not expected however, you will need to be prepared to do a 5 minute, rapid fire presentation describing the development of your project thus far (you can choose to use power point, handouts, etc.). If you choose power point you will need to utilize the LCH power point template to create your slides. Slides are located in the QI Tools section.  Presentations will take place in the month of December; schedules will be announced closer to time.

Conduct a Short QI Project

After completing your personal QI project, you will develop an actual short QI project during your second outpatient (ambulatory) rotation. This will allow you to use the QI tools and methods you have learned and practiced thus far, and apply the PDSA approach for testing changes in clinical settings. Because this is a short QI project, your Problem Statement should be simple enough to allow you to carry out one PDSA cycle to test a change. Prior to beginning your project, you will need to schedule a brief meeting with the QI Coach who will help you identify a feasible project, discuss project requirements and answer any questions you may have. Your Coach will be working closely with you throughout this process to assist you in meeting your requirements. The templates and examples of PDSA's, Aim statements and a short QI project are posted on the LCH CAPE website at in the QI Tools section. Once complete, submit your AIM, measures, PSA cycle, key changes and lessons learned to the QI coach.
