Timothy J. Lowe, PhD, joined Carolinas HealthCare System in 2007. Dr. Lowe is a Senior Scientist with the R. Stuart Dickson Institute for Health Studies and serves as the Epidemiologist for the Levine Children's Hospital. He is a board member of the Center for Advancing Pediatric Excellence, Levine Children's Hospital, and research faculty with the Carolinas Center for Injury Prevention and Control. In addition, he is a research consultant to several clinical departments at Carolinas Medical Center, assisting with the planning, design, and analysis of medical resident and attending faculty studies.
At Carolinas Medical Center, Dr. Lowe teaches research methods, basic statistics and evidence-based medicine courses as part of the hospital's nursing, residency and medical student training programs. His current research projects include pediatric asthma, early goal-directed therapy for treating severe sepsis and septic shock, pediatric rapid response teams, the assessment and improvement of nursing research skills, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and the use of acupuncture in the treatment of chemical addiction. Dr. Lowe's total grant funding exceeds $1.5 million.
Dr. Lowe received his BA from Hope College, his MDiv from Princeton Theological Seminary, and his MSW and PhD degrees from Rutgers University. He served in the United States Air Force during Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom where he received two citations for meritorious service. In additional to his scientific work, Dr. Lowe is a licensed social worker and professional musician.
