In addition to the corporate community benefits, CHS employees make invaluable contributions to the communities they serve by virtue of individual philanthropy and public service endeavors.
For example, employees in the Charlotte-metro area participate in three major community fund-raising initiatives each and every year. During 2007, employees collectively made the following donations out of their personal funds:
- United Way of the Central Carolinas, $2,379,000*
- Arts and Science Council of Mecklenburg County, $472,000
- Children's Miracle Network, $657,000
* The United Way total includes donations not only from Charlotte metro employees but from employees from CMC-Lincoln, CMC-NorthEast and Cleveland Regional HealthCare System as well.
In addition, our employees contributed generously to the community philanthropy drive that raised more than $66 million for Levine Children's Hospital. More than 13,000 employees made individual contributions that, over a five-year period, provided $4.2 million toward the $66 million total. In addition, more than 2,500 CMC-NorthEast employees contributed over $690,000 to a three-year capital campaign supporting Jeff Gordon Children's Hospital.
CHS conducts numerou s community educational programs on topics as diverse as CPR, control of chronic medical conditions and smoking cessation. The system has invested heavily in LiveWELL Carolinas! initiatives that emphasize the vital importance of diet, exercise and preventive health strategies as a way to promote public health and reduce healthcare costs. Employees participate actively in community-based projects such as Habitat for Humanity, Cancer Survivors' Day, playground builds, holiday gift exchanges and school supply donations for underprivileged children.
Finally, our employees set an exemplary standard when it comes to giving back and being involved. During 2007, for example, it is conservatively estimated that Charlotte-area employees donated more than 26,000 hours of time, collectively, to support charitable causes and nonprofit organizations.
Employees at all CHS hospitals throughout the Carolinas contribute in many ways to make their individual communities better places to live, work and play. These investments of time and effort supplement all of the direct and indirect corporate investments which are made to enhance and quality and accessibility of healthcare services for all who need assistance.
