Our clinicians manage newborns in the term nursery. The team cares for the normal, healthy, term newborns as well as the stable late preterm (34-36 weeks) newborn.
Term Nursery Services Include:
- Care of the normal, healthy term newborn
- Care of the stable late preterm (34-36 weeks) newborn
- Initial evaluation and management of common problems in the stable newborn (heart murmurs, low blood sugar, exposure to maternal infection, respiratory difficulties, jaundice, orthopedic problems, rashes, social issues, etc).
- Active breastfeeding support and encouragement
- Maternal and paternal education about infant care
- Social work support as needed
- Interpreting services
- Direct `rooming in' encouraged
- Opportunity for classes in smoking cessation and infant CPR
- Option to participate in clinical research studies
- Birth dose of Hepatitis B vaccine (strongly recommended)
- Car seat testing on infants < 37 weeks gestation and those with certain medical problems
- Newborn hearing screening (required for each infant)
- Newborn screening for endocrinologic, metabolic, and hematologic problems (required for each infant)
